Attempts to remedy the ongoing asylum dispute at East Wall appear to have failed with a further commitment by residents to continue the periodic blockage of the Port Tunnel.

Arising from the Department of Children’s placement of a 380 person asylum centre in the old ESB Building at East Wall, the community has seen two weeks of street level protests bringing the issue of migration to the fore of Irish political life.

With Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gorman insisting that there are no plans to pull back from the plans, talks between the minister and locals Friday failed to come to a resolution on the matter.

In a statement issued last night by a working committee of East Wall residents, locals committed themselves to blocking the Port Tunnel road passing directly alongside the ESB Building every Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 5pm until the centre is closed.

Apologising to those caught up in disruption the press statement hinted that the action was merely a ‘small taste’ of what is to come, promising a potential national escalation down the line between aggrieved communities.

Warning against the politicisation of the dispute by interested parties, the statement nevertheless called for increased direct action by locals affected by the asylum issue.

Drawing support from local councillor Noel Ring and republican activist and lawyer Malachy Steenson, the East Wall centre has become an open wound in the Irish asylum debate.

With no sign of abating, East Wall marks a considerable breach of political discourse in the Republic over matters of asylum and migration. Beginning to reap the dividends on a sloppy and ideologically misguided response to the Ukraine crisis and asylum issues at large, the goings on in the north inner city community is a test case for future attempts by authorities to run roughshod over the rights of local communities.

For all our sakes let’s hope the East Wall sticks to their guns.

  1. This country is in serious trouble, there are waves upon waves of Africans arriving here as asylum seekers and also under the pretence of visiting family and staying here illegally. We also have this family reunification policy that is bringing in thousands here every year. These reunifiers and “visitors “ are not included in statistics as new arrivals in Ireland. In truth we have over one hundred and fifty thousand Africans arriving here every year. This country is in serious trouble, we have learned nothing from the UK or USA

It’s about time other communities throughout Ireland got behind the
East Wall standoff, they’ve all equally been in the news about their
concerns for safety and the illegal use of buildings and crimes committed.
That is the only way this ridiculously conceived policy can be challenged
because govt. media and court have shown their bias and are puppets of
this dysfunctional regime. Clondalkin has 4 centers now,the last breaking
laws of the state, not fit for purpose and it is a disaster brewing should a
building catch fire. It is not the time to sit idly by watching quietly and
wishing ” Not in my back yard, I’m OK JACK “. This is an all Ireland
    problem.

Those thinking that this will pass on or just fade away are totally fooled
and unaware of the precarious situation unfolding. The handover on 7th
Dec. means absolutely nothing, the next election will be another disaster
because there is NO PLAN beyond 2030…by 2040,foreign govt. control.

    1. Ireland is already under the Brussels jackboot. We will have the highest % foreign born in all of europe ( 49 countries ) within 3 yrs . Our prisons & other services will cater for populations that are similarly foreign . Expect more & more housing to be gated ( echoes of South Africa ) , Ireland is the only country to allow Sth African tourists visa free access , why ? #StrangerInMyHomeland

  4. Our master & mistress Von Der Leyden is in Dublin to address both houses of the oireachtas . Expect the crazy commitment to accept a limitless number of asylum seekers ( in poorer areas ) to be repeated ad nauseum . Note – it’s Neil Ring , not Noel

Unfortunately, keeping up with the news involved having to read the
glorious account of 2 glory-holes glorifying each other’s asses.
Sad having to be reminded by Von da Lien in our Centenary of Celebration ( Irish Independence) that she ( EU ) were claiming the last
50 yrs of Ireland’s Sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Sickening to believe the 1/2 Moran Martin responded in mirrored fashion with an added commitment of a glorious future…utter scutter.

If this were a true reflection on our country and history these pair of
criminals would have been arrested. Her, for the illegal deal with Pfizer
her husbands conflict of interest, and His for the crimes of treason.
God willing, I hope to witness this great event in Ireland’s Lifetime.
